The Process Explained

Conception through to completion

With over 30 year's experience in designing and creating unique mirrors, we feel we're well qualified to work with you from conception to completion.  Here's an insight into how a typical project might work.

Home visits

We'll arrange to visit you in your property to look at the location, discuss what you're trying to achieve and establish your likes and dislikes.  We'll suggest some design possibilities, and discuss these with you - you're able to have as much or as little input as you wish.  Having discussed and explored the possibilities we progress towards the design stage.

Research and design (or how to make the right choice)

We'll help establish the correct design elements for your mirror in terms of size, style and finish.

Size - the scale has to be exactly right for the location, and carefully chosen proportions can make a world of difference.

Style - whether traditional, classical, or contemporary, the style is not only guided by the location but also by your personal taste and preferences.

Finish - the choice of finish is limitless, but needs to be appropriate to the location.  We'll help you envisage anything from gold, silver, copper, clay, wood, textured finishes, holographic leaf etc, depending on the desired effect

The build

Once the design specification is finalised the build process begins.  Every Joseph McCarthy frame is handmade in our Tunbridge Wells workshop using traditional techniques and the best of available modern materials.  The reverse-carved, boxwood moulds used to create each frame are from our historically important 'Bloomsbury Collection', which the Tate describes as "of extraordinary cultural significance".  These are the same moulds that have been used to make frames hanging in some of the world's leading art galleries and stately homes.

Installation

Once built, we'll install the mirror for you.  This way you can be sure it's well handled during transportation and that it's installed as carefully as it's built. The project is only considered complete when you're fully satisfied with our service.
